What do we mean by marketplaces?

Marketplaces on the web are sites where users can find each other - whatever they are looking for or offering. The difference to for example e-commerce sites can be best explained by the two modes of operation by Amazon. Amazon started by selling products by itself, but introduced later Amazon Webshops where affiliated sellers can connect to buyers on the site. The first mode of operation is e-commerce, the second a marketplace run by Amazon. With the global reach of the Internet, niche marketplaces that could not have attracted enough customers before have become possible. Many new web startups are platforms or marketplaces where people can meet and match their needs.

While there is a plethora of e-commerce platforms available for building e-commerce site, there are virtually no platforms in addition to VerticeTree marketplace that offer an easy and affordable way to start up a marketplace.
